About Ben
I'm Ben Chapman, founder of Some Grub. I run the company and I edit everything we publish here. This page is the why.
Where this started
I've struggled with my own gut health for years. If you've been through anything similar you'll know what the search for answers looks like: misinformation, snake oil, conflicting advice, and plenty of people selling things they didn't understand. What actually helped me wasn't a miracle product. It was understanding my triggers and cutting out ultra-processed food.
Before Some Grub I was a journalist. I spent a lot of that time interviewing food startups - founders challenging the big manufacturers on ingredients, processing and honesty. I watched the free-from aisle go from a shelf to an aisle to a movement, because enough people demanded food that didn't make them feel terrible.
Then I looked at what I was feeding my dog.
Dogs are stuck in the same ultra-processed food system humans have spent two decades climbing out of. The same symptoms - itchy skin, upset stomachs, bad poos - get managed rather than understood. There's no free-from aisle for dogs yet. I've lived the human version of that search, and I think our dogs are being shortchanged.
So we built Some Grub: hypoallergenic dog food and treats made with insect protein - a single novel protein, free from the four most common canine food allergens, made in the UK.
Why we publish all this
The information problem I hit with my own gut health is worse in the dog world. Owners with itchy, uncomfortable dogs are drowning in guesswork and marketing dressed up as advice. The guides and tools on this site exist to be the thing I couldn't find: straight answers, sourced properly, with the honest version even when it's inconvenient for us - including telling you when the food probably isn't the problem.
I'm not a vet and we don't pretend otherwise. Where something needs veterinary judgement, we say so and tell you to see yours. What I bring is an editor's discipline: every article on this site is checked against published research and our own editorial standards before it goes out, and I'm accountable for it.
The short version
- Some Grub exists because dogs deserve the free-from movement humans already got.
- Everything we publish is sourced, checked and edited before it goes live. The standards are public.
- We sell dog food. We tell you when dog food isn't the answer. Both of those are the point.
