Tomatoes belong to the nightshade family, and the family's defensive alkaloids concentrate in green tissue: leaves, stems and unripe fruit. Ripening breaks these down, which is why a ripe cherry tomato is a safe snack while a vine-raiding session in the greenhouse is a vet call.
Ripe tomato itself offers lycopene, vitamin C and water at few calories. Acidic quantities can unsettle sensitive stomachs, and sauces are a separate matter entirely, since onion, garlic and salt are near-universal in them.
How to serve it safely
- An occasional ripe cherry tomato or a slice of a larger one, plain.
- Fence off tomato plants from grazing dogs, and pick up windfalls.
