Can Dogs Eat Bread? Plain Is Fine, Dough Is an Emergency
Plain baked bread in small amounts is fine for most dogs, if nutritionally pointless. The real dangers are raw yeast dough, which expands and ferments alcohol inside the stomach and is a genuine emergency, and loaves containing raisins, garlic, onion or seeds in quantity.
Why the caveats matter
Baked white or wholemeal bread is mostly starch: harmless in moderation, useless as nutrition, and a fast route to weight gain if it becomes a habit. Dogs with wheat sensitivities (less common than assumed, but real) will show it in their skin or digestion.
Raw dough is a different story. The stomach is a warm proving drawer: the dough swells, stretching and potentially twisting the stomach, while the yeast ferments sugars into ethanol, which enters the bloodstream. A dog that has eaten rising dough can become bloated, wobbly and dangerously unwell within hours and needs a vet immediately.
How to serve it safely
- A small piece of plain baked bread as an occasional nibble is fine for most dogs.
- Never leave rising dough within counter-surfing range.
- Check what is baked in: raisin bread, garlic bread and onion breads carry their own toxins; heavily seeded loaves are needlessly rich.
- Skip bread entirely for dogs on a food trial or with suspected wheat sensitivity.
