Can Dogs Eat Milk? Most Adult Dogs Struggle With Lactose
It depends, and for many dogs the honest answer leans no. Milk is not toxic, but most adult dogs produce little of the lactase enzyme needed to digest lactose, so more than a splash commonly causes loose stools, wind and stomach gurgling. A small amount is fine for dogs who visibly tolerate it, but milk offers them nothing they need.
Why the caveats matter
Puppies digest their mother's milk easily because they produce plenty of lactase. Production falls away after weaning, which is why so many adult dogs get digestive upset from cow's milk. Tolerance varies dog to dog: some manage a splash without any trouble, others react to very little, and there is no way to know except by their history.
Beyond lactose, dairy is one of the more common food sensitivities in dogs, showing up as itchy skin, ear flare-ups or chronic loose stools rather than a dramatic one-off reaction. If dairy is a regular feature and those symptoms are too, it is worth an elimination trial, and novel-protein foods such as insect protein make it straightforward to feed well without any dairy at all.
How to serve it safely
- If your dog tolerates dairy, keep it to a splash (a tablespoon or two for a medium dog) as a rare treat, not a regular drink.
- Lactose-free milk or specific dog milks sidestep the lactose problem, though they still add calories your dog does not need.
- Never give cow's milk to puppies as a milk replacement. Orphaned or supplemented puppies need a proper puppy milk formula, so ask your vet.
- Skip flavoured milks and milkshakes entirely: sugar, chocolate flavourings and sweeteners all cause problems of their own.

No. Despite the cartoon image, cow's milk is a poor match for puppies and commonly causes diarrhoea, which is genuinely risky in very young animals. Puppies who need supplemental feeding should have a formulated puppy milk replacer.
What about oat milk or lactose-free milk?
Small amounts of plain, unsweetened oat or lactose-free milk are safe for most dogs, though neither offers any benefit. Avoid anything sweetened, and always check labels for xylitol in flavoured plant milks.
