A dog's gut microbiome is real, and diet does change it. Whether that translates into the health benefits on the packet is a separate question, and for the most-advertised benefit of all the answer is no.
Prebiotics reliably increase beneficial gut bacteria in dogs. The same meta-analysis that showed it also measured the immune markers and found no change at all. So a product can honestly say it changes gut bacteria and still have nothing behind an immunity claim.

The row in bold is the one worth remembering. It is the most common claim in the category and it is the one the dog evidence is actually against.
What a prebiotic is, and what it is not
A prebiotic is not a bacterium. It is a food component the dog does not digest, which survives the small intestine, reaches the large intestine, and is fermented by the bacteria already living there. Feeding the residents changes which of them predominate.
A probiotic is the other thing: live bacteria added to the diet. Both sit on the same shelf. "Chicory root" or "inulin" on an ingredients list means the first.
It has to survive digestion
The defining property. Something digested in the small intestine never reaches the bacteria and is not acting as a prebiotic.
The resident bacteria ferment it
Bifidobacteria and lactobacilli increase. The meta-analysis found the effect is larger when the dog's starting levels are low.
The dose has a documented ceiling
Effects held up to 1.40% of food intake on a dry matter basis. Above that the evidence stops, and protein digestibility trended down.
A bacterial shift is not a health outcome
This is the part the marketing skips. Measuring more bifidobacteria is a laboratory result. It is not the same as a dog who is better, and none of these studies demonstrated that the dogs were clinically better.

Where the marketing gets ahead of the science
Immunity. The meta-analysis that established the bacterial effect also measured serum IgG, IgA and IgM, and none of them moved. It found no change in C. perfringens or E. coli either. That is a genuine null result on the exact benefit most often advertised, from the same body of work the category cites for everything else.
Mood and behaviour. The gut-brain axis is real science and a large field. Read the gut-brain axis review. None of it is canine clinical evidence, so a product claiming your dog will be calmer is reaching well past what has been shown in dogs.
"High fibre" as if it were one thing. Fibre sources differ in how readily bacteria ferment them and how much water they hold, and the review of alternative sources states plainly that limited scientific information exists on many of the ones now used in pet food. Read the fibre sources review. The fibre percentage on a label does not tell you which of those jobs the food is doing.
Where our own ingredient sits
Some Grub uses black soldier fly larvae, which contain chitin. Chitin behaves like a prebiotic: it resists digestion, reaches the large intestine, and its derived oligosaccharides shift gut bacteria towards Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. The mechanism is well described. Read the chitin review.
There is no clinical trial in dogs showing chitin improves gut health outcomes. The review that describes the mechanism says so itself. Anyone claiming insect protein is clinically proven to fix your dog's gut, us included, is going beyond the research. A plausible mechanism is a reason to be interested. It is not a result.
When this stops being a diet question
ring your vet if
Ring your vet now, or an emergency vet out of hours, if any one of these is present. They do not need to occur together: repeated unproductive retching or attempts to be sick with nothing coming up; a suddenly swollen, tight or painful abdomen; collapse, marked weakness or pale gums; blood in vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds; black, tarry stools; or a dog you think has swallowed something toxic or an object. Any one of those on its own is enough. Ring your vet the same day, without waiting, if your dog is vomiting repeatedly or persistently, cannot keep water down, is showing signs of dehydration, has profuse or rapidly worsening diarrhoea, has blood in their stool, is in pain, or is lethargic, off their food or losing weight. Puppies, elderly dogs, pregnant dogs and dogs with an existing condition need seeing sooner rather than later, because they dehydrate faster and have less in reserve. The watch-and-wait window applies only to mild, uncomplicated diarrhoea in a dog who is otherwise bright, drinking normally and keeping water down. It does not apply to vomiting. Even then, diarrhoea running past about 48 hours is a call to your vet rather than a reason to change food.
Chronic gut signs deserve a diagnosis rather than a shelf swap. In dogs with diagnosed chronic enteropathy a diet change can genuinely induce remission, which is exactly why it belongs in a monitored veterinary plan and not in a shopping basket. Read the chronic enteropathy trial.

There are no supplement brands here and no product recommendations, deliberately. We sell competing food, so a list of what to buy would be worth very little to you.
There are no improvement timelines either. The studies behind this page measured different things over different periods: microbial populations, short-chain fatty acids, digestibility and immunoglobulins in one, faecal community structure in another, clinical remission in a third. None of them answers "how long until my dog seems better", so we are not going to invent a number.

How do I know if my dog has a gut problem?
Stool consistency is the everyday signal most owners notice first, and a pattern that keeps returning is worth a vet conversation. Some signs are not a wait-and-see: repeated unproductive retching, a suddenly swollen, tight or painful abdomen, collapse, marked weakness or pale gums, blood in vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, black tarry stools, or a suspected toxin or swallowed object all mean ring a vet immediately, each on its own. The same day, without waiting: repeated or persistent vomiting, unable to keep water down, dehydration, profuse or worsening diarrhoea, blood in stool, pain, lethargy, going off food, or weight loss. Puppies, elderly dogs, pregnant dogs and dogs with existing conditions need seeing sooner.
Should I give my dog a gut health supplement?
Ask what the product actually claims and whether that claim has been tested in dogs. "Changes gut bacteria" is supportable for prebiotics. "Supports immunity" is not, in dogs. And if your dog has ongoing symptoms, the money is better spent on a diagnosis first.
