Labrador Allergies: Signs, Causes and What to Check
Labrador Retrievers are repeatedly represented among breeds at higher risk of canine atopic dermatitis. Research in Labradors and Golden Retrievers also shows that environmental associations sit alongside genetic susceptibility. Breed changes the starting context, not the diagnosis: itchy paws, recurring ears and red skin still cannot tell you whether food, an environmental allergen or something else is responsible.
Breed may change
- How seriously a recurring skin pattern should be taken.
- The background probability of atopic dermatitis.
- The value of recording early environment and repeat exposures.
Breed does not prove
- That food causes the itch.
- That an ear problem is allergic.
- That coat colour, appetite or one lifestyle factor predicts an individual outcome.
Atopy risk and food-reaction risk are different questions. Labrador evidence must not be used to create a breed-specific list of foods to avoid.
What Labrador allergy research found
A systematic review and Australian veterinary teaching-hospital analysis placed Labrador Retrievers among breeds identified as predisposed to canine atopic dermatitis across reviewed populations. The hospital dataset contained more than 23,000 records, including 722 dogs with atopic dermatitis. Risk varied geographically, so this supports a repeated signal rather than a universal rank. (Mazrier et al., 2016)
A dedicated retrospective case-control study included 2,445 Labrador and Golden Retrievers: 793 dogs classed as cases and 1,652 controls. Within that total were 575 Labrador cases and 1,120 Labrador controls. Case status came from an owner-completed, standardised validated questionnaire, while the environmental history was collected retrospectively. Questionnaire classification and recalled history can introduce classification and recall bias. The researchers found several environmental associations within these two at-risk breeds; this was not a Labrador-versus-other-breeds risk comparison. (Harvey et al., 2019)
That study is useful because it resists a genes-only story. It does not prove that changing one household feature will prevent or treat atopy. Retrospective associations can reflect timing, other linked factors and differences between cases and controls. The authors themselves said the precise triggers were unclear.
For confirmed cutaneous adverse food reactions, a critical appraisal of 825 dogs did not provide the local breed denominators needed to establish a reliable unique breed predisposition. Labradors can have food reactions, but Labrador atopy evidence is not proof of a Labrador food-allergy pattern. (Olivry and Mueller, 2019)
Signs worth recording
A multicentre atopy study found paws, the underside, ears and face were commonly affected locations across its cohort, but lesion distribution differed between sites and breeds. Location helps describe the case. It does not name the allergen. (Jaeger et al., 2010)

A Labrador's willingness to eat does not tell you whether a food is tolerated. Appetite, ingredient response and diagnostic evidence are separate things.
How to use the genes-and-environment finding
The practical value of the Labrador research is better history-taking. Note where your dog was raised if known, when the itch first appeared, seasonal change, home moves, other animals, regular walking environments and parasite control. Do not try to reconstruct puppyhood perfectly or blame one choice.
Current guidelines diagnose atopic dermatitis by combining history and clinical features with the exclusion of lookalikes. Parasites, bacterial or yeast infection and other causes need attention. No physical sign reliably separates food allergy from non-food-induced atopic dermatitis. (Miller et al., 2023)

When a food trial belongs in the plan
If food remains plausible after the wider work-up, the diagnostic route is a controlled elimination diet followed by re-challenge. The individual dog's entire food history determines whether a protein is genuinely novel and whether a veterinary hydrolysed diet is suitable. Blood, hair and saliva tests are not reliable replacements for diagnosing a food reaction. This does not address allergy testing used to select allergens for immunotherapy after environmental atopy has been diagnosed. (Mueller and Unterer, 2018)
Guidance commonly assesses a strict trial across about eight weeks, sometimes longer under veterinary direction. Every meal, treat, chew, scrap, supplement and flavoured medicine needs to fit the plan. With a food-motivated Labrador, preventing scavenging and food from other pets is part of running a clean test, not proof that a particular ingredient is the problem. A practical next-step plan
- Check urgency.Facial swelling, breathing difficulty or collapse needs emergency help. Marked ear pain, wet skin, blood, pus or a dog who seems unwell needs prompt advice.
- Photograph and map the sites.Use similar light and include dates without forcing an uncomfortable dog to pose.
- Add time and environment.Record season, walks, home changes, other animals and whether the pattern repeats.
- List parasite control and past treatment.Give names, dates and what happened rather than relying on memory.
- Write the complete diet history.Include stolen food, training rewards, chews, scraps and flavoured medicines.
- Ask your vet for the order of investigation.Rule out common mimics and complications before testing a food theory.

Are Labrador Retrievers prone to allergies?
Labradors recur among breeds at higher risk of canine atopic dermatitis, and a large Labrador and Golden Retriever study supports environmental as well as genetic associations. Breed raises the index of suspicion. It does not mean every Labrador is allergic or identify the trigger.
Are Labrador allergies usually caused by food?
The strongest breed evidence concerns atopic dermatitis, not a Labrador-specific food allergy. Food can contribute for an individual dog, but paws, ears, year-round itch and breed cannot confirm it. A vet-led elimination diet followed by re-challenge is the diagnostic route when food remains plausible.
Why does my Labrador keep licking their paws?
Paw licking can occur with allergy, parasites, infection, irritation, pain or another problem. Record which paws are involved, when it happens and whether walks or seasons change it. The location helps describe the pattern but does not identify an allergen.
Do recurring ear infections mean my Labrador has a food allergy?
No. Recurring ear trouble can be part of allergic skin disease, but it also has other causes and complications. Record which ear is affected, pain, smell, discharge and previous treatment. A veterinary examination is needed, and ears alone cannot diagnose a food reaction.
What food is best for a Labrador with allergies?
There is no single best food for the breed. If a vet recommends a diagnostic food trial, the diet must fit that dog's complete history and nutritional needs. It may use a genuinely novel protein or veterinary hydrolysed diet, followed strictly and then challenged to interpret the result.
When should I call the vet?
Get emergency help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or collapse. Seek prompt advice for marked ear pain, blood, pus, wet or rapidly spreading skin change, or a dog who seems unwell. Persistent or recurring itch also deserves an appointment.
