Can Dogs Eat White Fish? Yes, Cod and Haddock Are Great Cooked Plain

by Ben, co-founder · updated July 2026 · 2 min read

Fine for most dogs

Yes. Plain cooked white fish such as cod, haddock, pollock and plaice is one of the gentlest proteins you can share with a dog: lean, easy to digest and low in mercury. The rules are simple: cook it, skip the batter, breadcrumbs, salt and butter, and check carefully for bones before it goes in the bowl.

Why it works

White fish is lean muscle protein with very little fat, which is exactly why vets often suggest it (usually with rice) as part of a bland diet for dogs recovering from an upset stomach. Cod and haddock are also low-mercury species, so there is no build-up concern with regular sensible portions. Fish is a less common trigger than chicken or beef in dogs with food sensitivities, which makes it a useful protein to have in the rotation, though any protein can cause a reaction in an individual dog.

The problems are almost entirely human additions. Battered or breaded fish from the chippy brings frying oil, salt and sometimes onion or garlic seasoning. Smoked and dyed fillets carry a heavy salt load. And fish bones, especially cooked ones, are brittle and sharp, so fillets need a proper check with your fingers before serving.

How to serve it safely

  • Poach, steam, bake or microwave it plain. No salt, butter, oil or seasoning.
  • Run your fingers through the flaked flesh to find stray bones before serving.
  • Portion guide: a tablespoon or two of flaked fish for a small dog, up to a modest fillet for a large dog, as a topper or occasional meal component.
  • Frozen white fish fillets are a cheap, safe option. Defrost fully and cook as normal.
  • Leave the chip-shop version alone: batter, breadcrumbs and frying oil are where the trouble lives.

When to ring the vet

ring your vet if

Gagging, drooling or pawing at the mouth if a bone may have caught · Vomiting or diarrhoea, most likely if the fish was fried or seasoned · Itchy skin or ears if fish becomes a regular feature, as fish allergy is possible though uncommon · Increased thirst after smoked or salted fish

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give my dog fish and chips?

A flake or two of the fish from inside the batter will not hurt most dogs, but the batter, oil and salt make the full portion a bad idea, and rich fried food is a known pancreatitis trigger in prone dogs. Cook a plain fillet instead.

Is white fish good for dogs with sensitive stomachs?

It is one of the classic choices. Plain poached white fish is lean and easy to digest, which is why vets often recommend it during recovery from tummy upsets. Reintroduce normal food gradually afterwards.

Can dogs eat fish skin?

Cooked plain fish skin is fine for most dogs in small amounts. Avoid it if it is salted, smoked or fried, and skip raw skin, which can carry parasites.
