Yes. Courgette is one of the safest vegetables you can share with a dog: low in calories, gentle on most stomachs, and a decent source of fibre and potassium. Serve it plain, raw or cooked, without oil, salt, butter or garlic. The only real caution is a rare bitter-tasting courgette, which nobody, dog or human, should eat.
Why it works
Courgette is mostly water, with useful fibre, potassium and vitamin C in the remainder. That makes it a genuinely good low-calorie treat, especially for dogs on a diet: it adds bulk and crunch without adding much energy, which is why vets often suggest vegetables like courgette as swaps for biscuits when a dog needs to lose weight.
The one caveat is cucurbitacins, bitter compounds that occasionally turn up in courgettes (usually homegrown or cross-pollinated ones). A bitter courgette can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs just as it can in people. Commercial supermarket courgettes are bred to be free of them, so this is rare, but if a courgette tastes noticeably bitter, bin it rather than sharing it.
How to serve it safely
- Serve plain: raw sticks, grated over dinner, or steamed. Skip anything fried in oil or roasted with garlic, onion or salt.
- Small dogs: a few thin slices or a tablespoon grated. Medium dogs: a quarter of a courgette. Large dogs: up to half, chopped so it is not a choking risk.
- Introduce gradually. Any new vegetable in quantity can cause wind or loose stools while the gut adjusts.
- Taste-check homegrown courgettes first. If it is bitter, throw it away, do not feed it.
- Keep treats and extras under about 10 percent of the day's calories, though with courgette you would struggle to get anywhere near that.
