Can Dogs Eat Chickpeas? Yes, Plain and Cooked. Hummus Doesn't Count
Yes. Plain, cooked chickpeas are safe for most dogs in small amounts and offer fibre, plant protein and B vitamins. Rinse tinned ones well, skip anything seasoned, and be clear that hummus is a different question entirely because of the garlic. Portions should stay modest, as chickpeas are windy.
Why it works
Chickpeas are a decent little package of fibre, plant protein, folate and manganese, which is why they feature in a fair few commercial dog foods. Cooked until soft and served plain, they are easy for most dogs to handle in sensible amounts.
The caveats are the same as for most legumes: too many at once means wind and loose stools, and the human versions of chickpea dishes are the real hazard. Hummus contains garlic, roasted chickpea snacks are usually salted and spiced, and curries bring onion and salt. The chickpea is fine; the seasoning around it usually is not.
How to serve it safely
- Use tinned chickpeas in water, rinsed thoroughly, or dried ones soaked and boiled until soft.
- Serve plain and cool: a few chickpeas for a small dog, up to a small handful for a large dog, ideally mashed or squashed for enthusiastic gulpers.
- Mix into their normal food rather than serving as a standalone snack.
- Avoid roasted, salted or flavoured chickpea snacks, and anything from a curry or salad with dressing.
- Introduce gradually over a few days to let their gut adjust.
