The catch is the same one humans know well. Cruciferous vegetables contain fermentable compounds that gut bacteria break down into gas, so too much cauliflower means a windy, gurgly dog and possibly loose stools. Raw florets are also quite tough, so large chunks can be a choking hazard for small dogs and enthusiastic gulpers.
How to serve it safely
- Steam or boil it plain, no salt, butter, oil or seasoning. Lightly cooked is easier to digest than raw.
- Chop florets small: fingernail-sized pieces for small dogs, bite-sized for larger ones.
- Portion sense: a floret or two for a small dog, a small handful for a labrador-sized dog, a few times a week at most.
- Never share cauliflower cheese, roasted trays with garlic and onion, or anything from a curry. The extras are the problem, not the vegetable.
