Can Dogs Eat Cabbage? Yes, Though Their Bottom May Disagree
Yes. Cabbage in all its forms, white, red, savoy, is safe for dogs in modest amounts and brings fibre, vitamin K and antioxidants. The honest downside is wind: cabbage ferments in the gut just as it does in ours, so a little goes a long way. Serve it plain and lightly cooked, and keep sauerkraut, coleslaw and anything cooked with onion off the menu.
Why it works
Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable, cousin to broccoli and kale, and carries the same package of fibre, vitamins C and K and plant antioxidants. Lightly steaming it softens the tough fibre and makes it easier on a dog's digestion than a pile of raw leaves.
Two things to know. First, the fermentation that causes wind and, in big helpings, loose stools; introduce cabbage gradually and keep portions small. Second, cruciferous veg contain compounds called goitrogens that can interfere with thyroid function in theory, but only at daily quantities far beyond anything sensible; an occasional helping is nowhere near that territory, though dogs with a diagnosed thyroid condition warrant a word with your vet first.
How to serve it safely
- Lightly steamed and plain is best; a small amount of raw shredded cabbage is fine for most dogs too.
- Portion sense: a tablespoon of shredded cabbage for a small dog, a small handful for a large one, mixed into food or offered as it is.
- Introduce it gradually over a few meals to keep the wind manageable.
- Skip coleslaw (mayonnaise, onion, salt), sauerkraut and kimchi (salt, spice, sometimes garlic), and any cabbage cooked with onion, bacon or gravy. Bubble and squeak usually fails on the onion count.
